Gujarati dal brings a refreshing change after consuming spicy food. This dal is mild and a bit sweet. You can adjust the sweetness according to your taste.

Ingredients:
Half cup Tuvar dal/split Pigeon peas
1 Tomato, chopped finely
1/2″ Ginger sliced
Half a teaspoon of Turmeric Powder
2 tbsp Jaggery
Juice of one Lemon
Salt to taste
Coriander leaves to garnish
For the seasoning:
1 tbsp Oil
1 tsp Mustard Seeds
1 tsp Jeera/Cumin seeds
1/2 tsp Methi/Fenugreek Seeds
A pinch of Hing/Asafoetida Powder
1 dried Red Chili
2 Cloves
1 inch Cinnamon
1/2 tsp Red Chili powder
Method:
Boil Tur dal and pour it in a thick-bottomed pan. Add Salt, Jaggery, Tomato, Ginger, Turmeric powder and boil for 3 minutes. Add Lemon and boil for another minute. Remove from heat and keep aside.
In another small pan, heat Oil and add Mustard and when they splutter, add Jeera, Methi, Red Chili, Cloves, Cinnamon, Hing, and Red Chili powder. Pour this over the cooked dal and mix well. Garnish with Coriander leaves.
Serve hot with plain rice or Phulka.
It is great to eat on its own as a snack with a dash of yoghurt topped with some Sev.
