Belur Chennakeshava Temple complex comprises of many temples dedicated to various deities. One such temple is the Saumyanayaki temple. Saumyanayaki is the consort of Lord Vishnu (Chennakeshava). The shrine is situated to the south west of the Keshava temple.
The temple has a Garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanctorum) with a tower. According to an inscription the original tower, which was damaged was got repaired in 1387 by Muddappa a minister under the Vijayanagara King Harihara II. A metal Kalasa or finial was fixed on top of the tower. The front portion of this temple was later added by the Dalavayi family of Kalale.
