Beaches of Pondicherry

The beaches in Pondicherry are another attraction for visitors to the city. The sun rise in the early mornings and the fisherman returning to shore in the evenings are best enjoyed by the sea.

As the beaches are situated a little away from the city, they are clean and not very crowded. November to January is the best time to be on the beaches. Many of the anglo-french battles were fought on the sands and sea of Pondicherry.

There are four popular beaches to hang out in Pondicherry and they are:
1. Promenade
2. Paradise Beach
3. Serenity beach
4. Auroville beach

Promenade: The promenade or sea face as it is popularly known as is 1.5 kms long running along the beach. This is also known as Gourbert Avenue. A walk on the promenade is rejuvenating. There are many heritage buildings lined on this road.

During Sun Rise, the colors splashed on the sea and sky is a sight to behold.

The endless waves rising and crashing on the boulders stimulates your senses and only the blaze of the sun as it rises can make you return back to your hotel. The roads leading to the promenade are neat and well laid with shops lined on one side selling some great souvenirs.

At one end of Goubert Avenue is built the Indian war memorial. A helmet perched on a rifle signifies the sacrifice made by Indian soldiers. Four tall carved pillars from Gingee fort are placed all around this memorial.

In the evenings you can find many hawkers selling ice creams to spicy sundal / snack.

The avenue reverberates with music played by the police band on Saturday evenings near the Gandhi statue.

Paradise Beach: This beach also known as Plage Pardiso is located 8 Km from Pondicherry. Drive down Cuddalore main road to reach Chunnambar backwaters resort. At Chunnambar you have to take a boat to reach this beach. At one side of the beach is the river and the other side is the sea.
Serenity Beach: This is situated 5 -6 Kms to the north of Pondicherry. A perfect place to unwind and relax by either taking a dip in the sea or walking on the sand.

Auroville Beach: The Auroville Beach is very near Auroville and is situated 12 Kms from Pondicherry. An ideal place to spend time with family and friends.
