The meaning of the Sanskrit shloka dedicated to Lord Shiva is as follows –
O’ Lord Vishwanatha residing in Kashi, you are the one with poison in your throat, river Ganges on your head, you are the husband of Bhavani, you are part of Nandi, Skanda and Ganesha and you are the Guru of everyone and I pray to you to do good to the universe.
The Mondays in the Hindu month of Karthika are known as Karthika Somavaragalu. The festival of lights Diwali / Deepavali falls in this month. October – November in the Gregorian calendar. This year (2009) it falls on 19th Oct, 26th Oct, 2nd Nov, 9th Nov and16th Nov.
Somavar / Monday is the day of Lord Shiva. He is also known as Someshwara, the one who wears Soma / moon on his head.
On these days special poojas are offered to Lord Shiva. Can do Karthika / Light seva to the gods and goddesses in temples by lighting many oil lamps. Light 2 oil lamps near the main door and also near the Tulasi / Holy Basil plant in the evenings during Karthika masa light 2 oil lamps near the main door and also near Tulasi plant.
Taking a holy dip in the ponds situated at Nara Hari Betta, Bantwal on the day of Karthik Somvara is considered to be sacred according to the Hindu mythology.
