Hagalkayi Khara Gojju is a side dish prepared using Bitter Gourd. The gravy is Sweet, Sour, and Spicy.
Time Required: 20 Minutes
1 Cup Hagalkayi / Bitter gourd pieces
5 Green Chilies
½ tsp Turmeric Powder
A gooseberry sized Tamarind
Salt to taste
For the seasoning:
1tsp Uddinabele / Black Gram Split
½ tsp Mustard Seeds
Few Curry leaves
Boil together Hagalkayi, Green Chilies, Turmeric Powder, and Salt until the vegetable is soft. Let it cool. Drain the water. Grind the cooked Hagalkayi with Tamarind to a paste. You can add two tbsp. water while grinding. Remove the paste to a kadai / pan and cook on low flame.
In another pan, heat Oil and add Uddinabele, Mustard Seeds, and Curry leaves. Add this to the Gojju and mix well. Add Jaggery and cook for a minute. Remove to a serving bowl and serve with plain Rice or Idli / Dosa.
