A check dam was built by Kudremukh Iron Ore Company on the River Lakya, which is a tributary of River Bhadra. Lakya Dam is located in the heart of the Kudremukh National Park to collect silt and other waste materials from the mining sites.
Completed in 1994, the purpose of Lakya Dam was to stop the contamination from the mine to flow further downstream. The water from this dam was also used to irrigate lands in the surrounding areas.
Height of the dam is 100 meters, length is 1048 meters, and it is spread over 572 hectares.
Though defunct now, as the mining has been banned from the eco-sensitive area in 2005, a visit to the dam is a must.
The surrounding area with green rolling hills is breathtaking. Silence and the beauty of the place will make you appreciate the energy of the creator.
The creases in between the hills, the shola forests, the trickling waterfalls, can there be a better place than this.
You will keep wondering how you had not discovered this treasure tucked away in the Western Ghats.
