Purple Yam Raita – Ratalu Raitha Recipe – Yam with Yogurt

Purple Yam Raitha

Winter is the time when Purple Yam arrives in the market in Gujarat to make the elaborate Undhiyo.  I got the vegetable from Amazon and was able to make Undhiyo and this tasty raitha.

Cuisine: Gujarat

Ingredients:
4 large pieces of Purple Yam
2 to 3 cups Curds/Yogurt
1/2 tsp Ginger
1/2 tsp Green Chili paste  
1/2 tsp roasted Cumin Powder
1/4 tsp White or Black Pepper Powder 
1/4 tsp Black Salt
Chopped Coriander leaves for garnishing
Salt to taste

Method:
Peel and cut the Yam into big pieces.  Boil the Purple Yam with little Salt.  Cut them into pieces or mash in hand.

In a mixing bowl, add Yogurt, Ginger-Chili Paste, Black Salt, Roasted Cumin Powder, Pepper Powder, and Salt.  Mix well until the yogurt is smooth.  Add the Purple Yam and mix gently.

Remove to a serving bowl.

Chill the Ratalu raitha in the refrigerator for half an hour.

Garnish with Coriander leaves and serve Purple Yam Raita with you choice of Indian Bread.
