Amritsari Dal

Amritsar is a city of Punjab and is home to the Golden temple. Amritsari Dal is prepared in Gurudwaras and served to devotees during lunch time (Langar). It is prepared using Split Black Gram and Bengal Gram.

Time Required: 40 Minutes

Ingredients:
1 Cup Urad Dal / Split Black Gram Dal
½ Cup Bengal Gram Dal
1 Onion, Chopped finely
1 or 2 Tomatoes, Chopped finely
1 tsp Turmeric Powder
2 – 3 Green Chilies, Chopped finely
1” Ginger, Chopped finely
3 Garlic Cloves, Chopped finely
1 – 3 Bay Leaves
2 pieces of Cinnamon
2tbsp Butter
2tbsp Oil
1tbsp Ghee
1tsp Chili Powder
1tsp Coriander Powder
¼ tsp Hing / Asfoetida
2tbsp Kasuri Methi / Dry Fenugreek Leaves, Crushed
Salt to taste

Method:
Soak Urad Dal and Bengal Gram Dal for an hour. Pressure cook until soft and remove to a thick-bottomed pan.
Heat Oil and Ghee in another pan and add  Turmeric Powder, Bay Leaves, Cinnamon, Green Chilies,  Ginger, Garlic, and Hing.  Stir.

Add Tomatoes and Onions and stir-fry for two minutes.

Add Chili Powder and Coriander Powder.  Stir.

Add this seasoning to the cooked Dal and mix well.

Add Butter and let it come to a boil.

Add Kasuri Methi and mix well.

Serve hot with Indian Bread.
