Sihi Kootu – Sweet Vegetable Curry – Sweet Sambar

Sihi Kootu

Sihi means sweet in Kannada. Sihi Kootu is a sweet curry served with plain Rice. We were served this Kootu in Kalasa, Chikkamagalur district in one of our friend’s house.

Time Required: 40 Minutes

Ingredients:
7 – 8 Beans, Stringed and chopped into inch pieces
1 Carrot Peeled and Diced
1 Cup Peeled and Diced Seemebadanekayi (Coyote)
1 Cup Peeled and Diced Sweet Pumpkin
1 Potato Peeled and Diced
1 Cup Thogaribele (Red Gram Split)
¼ Cup Groundnuts
1 – 2 tbsp Jaggery
Salt to taste

For the masala paste:
1 tbsp Uddina Bele (Black Gram Split)
1½ tbsp Raw Rice
10 – 12 Black Peppercorns
4 Guntur Dry Red Chilies
2 Byadagi Dry Red Chilies (Optional)
¼ Cup Fresh Coconut

Seasoning:
2tbsp Oil
1tsp Mustard Seeds
¼ tsp Hing / Asafoetida
Few Curry leaves
1 broken Red Chili

Method:
Cook Togaribele and Groundnuts in the cooker. Cook the vegetables separately until soft.


Roast all the ingredients for the paste except for Coconut.

Grind everything together with Coconut to a paste.


Mix Togaribele, Vegetables, and the paste in a big vessel.

If the Kootu is too thick, add a cup of water. Add Salt and Jaggery. Mix well and let the Huli come to a boil.
Heat Oil separately and add Mustard Seeds, when they splutter, add Turmeric Powder, Hing, Curry leaves, and Red Chili. Pour this over the Kootu and mix well.

Serve Sihi Kootu with plain Rice.
