Huli Avalakki – Sweet and Sour Poha – Sweet and Sour Beaten Rice

Huli Avalakki

Huli Avalakki is a dish prepared using beaten rice. The taste is sweet, sour and spicy. This dish is prepared during festivals as offerings to gods.

Serves: 4

Ingredients:
4 Cups thick Avalakki/Beaten Rice
3 tbsp Grated Jaggery
2 Cups thin Tamarind Juice
4 tsp Sarina Pudi/Rasam Powder
4 tsp Sesame Seeds, roasted and powdered
1/2 Cup Dry Coconut, grated and powdered
Salt to Taste

For the Seasoning:
4tbsp Oil
2tsp Mustard Seeds
4tsp Groundnuts / Peanuts
1/2tsp Turmeric Powder
Few Curry Leaves
A pinch of Hing/Asafoetida

Method:

Grind Avalakki to a coarse powder and remove to a mixing bowl.

To this add Tamarind Juice, Jaggery, Rasam Powder,  and Salt.  

Mix well.

Keep it aside for 30 to 40 minutes.

Now heat Oil in a pan and fry Groundnuts and remove aside.  To the heated Oil, add Kadalebele, Uddinabele, Mustard Seeds.  When the Mustard Seeds starts to splutter add Turmeric Powder, Asafoetida and Curry leaves. Add this to the Avalakki mixture along with Coconut and Sesame Seeds powder.

Add Groundnuts.

Mix well and remove to a serving dish.

If needed, garnish with grated dry coconut.  Serve Huli Avalakki with Kosambari, Papad, and Sandige (fryums).
