Avalakki Recipe

Kurtkoti is my maternal grandparents place, which is a village in North Karnataka, where most of my summer holidays were spent with fun, food and freedom. This Spicy crunchy flattened rice snack is a favorite among the residents as breakfast, snack or dinner.

Time Required: 25 Minutes

Ingredients:
500gms Avalakki / Flattened Rice
3tsp Red Chili Powder
3tbsp Menthedittu
Salt to taste

For the seasoning:
6tbsp Oil
2tsp Mustard Seeds
1tsp Turmeric Powder
1/3 tsp Hing / Asafoetida

For Serving (4 Persons):
8tbsp Fresh Coconut, grated
Juice of half Lemon
2tbsp Chopped Coriander Leaves
Few Onion Rings
Few Tomato roundels
Few Cucumber roundels
Few Capsicum slices

Method:
Sun dry Avalakki for half an hour. In a big bowl mix Avalakki, Salt, Menthedittu and Red Chili Powder. Heat Oil, add Mustard Seeds and when they splutter add Turmeric Powder. Remove from heat and let it cool. Add this to the Avalakki and mix with hand until the Avalakki turns yellow.

Store in airtight containers.

For Serving:
Take 4 cups of prepared Avalakki in a bowl and add Coconut, Lemon and Coriander leaves. Mix well.

Serve with Onion, Tomato, Cucumber and Capsicum slices.  You can also serve Chutney Powder along with this Avalakki.
