Kusuri – Sakkare Kalu – Shankranti Sesame Seeds Sugar

Sesame seeds coated with sugar is known as Kusuri – Sakkare Kalu.  These are distributed during Makara Shankranthi in Karnataka. Making them is time consuming and exhausting. My mother used to prepare this along with her cousins when she was young and I was more than curious to know how it is prepared. These Kusuri – Sakkare Kalu are used to make ornaments for children.  The children (below 5 years old) are decked with these ornaments on Makara Shankranthi evening and a Aarathi is performed to the children.

Here is the method to prepare Kusuri Kalu.

Ingredients:
1 Cup Sugar
1/2 Cup Milk
¾ Cup Water
2 tbsp White Sesame Seeds

Method:
Mix Sugar and Water and let it boil.

Add Milk to remove impurities from Sugar. Seive Sugar water. Continue to boil the Sugar water until it becomes a little thick.

Ensure that the syrup is not too thick, not even single thread syrup.

Roast the Sesame seeds and remove the pan from heat and add few drops of syrup and mix well.

Keep on heat again and stir. Remove from fire and add few drops of syrup and stir.

Keep on fire. Continue doing this, until the sugar coats on each of the Sesame seeds.

You can add colors to the Syrup and give a final coat to the Sakkare kalu.
