Mavinakayi Saaru – Raw Mango broth

Mavinakayi Saaru

Mavinakayi Saaru is a curry prepared using Raw Mangoes.  This type of curry is prepared in Mangalore – Udupi region and is served with white rice.

Time Required: 25 Minutes

Ingredients:
1 Raw Mango
4 Green Chilies
1 spring Curry Leaves
1tsp Oil
1 tsp Jeera/Cumin Seeds
1 tsp Mustard Seeds
1 Bengal gram size Hing/Asafoetida to be added while boiling
A pinch of powdered Hing/Asafoetida to be added in the seasoning
¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
Little Jaggery or according to taste
Few sprigs of Coriander leaves
Salt to taste

Method:
Pressure cook the whole Mango along with the skin and green chilies. 

Remove the peel off the Mango and mash the pulp.  Throw away the stone.  Mash the Green Chilies into the Mango Pulp.  Remove the pulp into a vessel and add 2 Cups of water, Curry Leaves, Coriander sticks, Jaggery, Hing, and Salt.  Let it boil for 2 minutes. Sieve and continue to boil for a minute. Sieving is optional.

Heat Oil in another pan and add Mustard Seeds and when they splutter, add Jeera, Hing and Turmeric powder.  Pour this over the Mango curry mix well. 

Garnish with Coriander leaves and serve with plain Rice or serve in a glass with ghee to sip.
