Omkareshwar Temple – Madikeri

In Madikeri / Coorg there is an ancient Omkareshwar temple dedicated to Lord Omkareshwara / Shiva which was built by Lingarajendra Wodeyar II in 1820.  The Omkareshwar temple is built in Kerala, Gothic and Islamic styles of Architecture with red-tiled roof and domes.

There is a  holy tank with lots of fishes, which is 60 feet in depth.  There is a small path on the tank leading to a small Mantap situated in the middle of the tank.  There are four minarets around the temple and a dome in the center.

Legend associated with the place:
King Lingarajendra once killed a Brahmin for his selfish political needs. The spirit of the Brahmin started pestering the king. On consulting learned people, he was advised to build a Shiva temple to get rid of Brahma Hatya Dosha. The king went to Kashi and bought a Shivalinga and built this temple.
