One of the oldest schools of Mysuru, Hardwicke School was started by Christian missionaries in the year 1854 during the reign of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. The school was known as Wesleyan High School and Methodist Mission High School. Later it was renamed as “Raja School”. In order to honor the British Hardwicke missionary network, it was again renamed as Hardwicke school.
The school was running near Gandhi Square and later was moved to this location on Jhansi Lakshmi Bai road in 1930.
The architecture of the school building is influenced by the French Chateau. The whole structure is symmetrical with an open central courtyard and oozes with the colonial era inspiration.
The striking central section features a three-storey rectangular tower. This overlooks the enormous open foreground. There are prominent arches framed with arch borders. The classroom ceilings are extremely high to let the tropical sunlight light the room naturally.
Madras terrace roofing is used, which is common even now in South India.
The school offers primary, higher primary, high school, and pre-university level education.
Prominent people like Rashtrakavi Kuvempu, Thathaiah, matyr Ramaswamy (freedom struggle), movie maker Puttanna Kanagal, A.N.Murthy Rao and many more.
