Gayathri Tiffin Room, Mysore

Gayathri Tiffin Room restaurant in Mysore more popularly known as GTR is a must visit for all the avid Masala Dosa fans.  Your life is complete only after you have enjoyed the Masala Dosa in GTR.

Our out-of-Mysore trips always starts with the Masala Dosa and filter coffee breakfast at GTR.

Sri Subbaraya Bhatru from Arur started the Brahmanara Palahara Mandira in 1940 in a building opposite the current restaurant.  Here, Bhatru used to serve Dosa and Idli on plantain leaves.  Customers would sit on a wooden plank (mane) on the floor and would be served food.

In 1950, the current building was purchased and was named Gayathri Tiffin Room.  Here, the Masala Dosa and Idli became very popular.

The dosas are soft and fluffy inside and crisp on the outside.  It is roasted using Ghee (clarified butter).  The chutney accompanying the dosa is unique to this restaurant. The Alu palya (potato dish) inside the dosa is very basic and there is scope for improvement.  Salt sprinkler could be provided on every table.

Currently, the restaurant is run by Sri Vijayendra who is the grandson of Sri Subbaraya Bhatru.  He has started GTR delite on the first floor, which serves North Indian and South Indian meals in the afternoon.

Come evening and people line up for the Mangalore Bajji and filter coffee.  The Kesaribhath and Gajar Halwa are also a must haves in this restaurant.

To add to your Monday blues, GTR is closed on Mondays.
