The cartoon character Popeye, the sailor man and Spinach are synonyms to each other and kids are coaxed to eat the power packed Spinach by reminding them about Popeye getting strength from this humble leaf.

It is known as Palak in India and the botanical name is Spinacia oleracea and belongs to Amaranthaceae family.

Spinach plant grows to a height of 12 inches and is an annual plant. The leaves are green, broad, alternate and varies in size according to the age of the plant. The flowers are minute, yellowish green around 3 to 4 mm in diameter and bloom in clusters. The fruits are 5 to 10 mm in diameter with several seeds.

Spinach is consumed raw or blanched. It is rich in vitamins, iron, and folate. This leafy vegetable also contains calcium.
