Division of food according to Ayurveda

Sativik food

Being a vegetarian, I have been the butt of sniggers and jokes.  When I ask the question to myself “Why am I a vegetarian?”, the answer is that I was born in a vegetarian family.  It is often the taste and aroma that you grow up in, which strongly influences our food and diet choice. People choose to be a vegetarian, non-vegetarian, vegan, eggetarian, or adapt to Jain food.  According to Ayurveda, food is divided into the following three types:

  • Satvik
  • Tasmik
  • Rajasik

Satvik: Satvik food is vegetarian and does not contain too much of spices and are devoid of Garlic and Onion. This type of food is easy to digest and encourages positive thoughts.  

It also keeps the mind and body active. During Dasara, people have only Satvik food to appease the goddesses.

Tasmik: Tasmik food is non-vegetarian and contains more spices, garlic, and onion.  

This type of food is high in calories and encourages negative thoughts.

Rajasik: Rajasik food can be vegetarian and non-vegetarian.  It is rich in exotic and expensive ingredients like Ghee, Butter, Dry Fruits and Nuts, Saffron and so on.  

This type of food makes a person lethargic and encourages negative thoughts.
