Hebbur Kamakshi Sharada Temple

Shri Kamakshi Sharada Temple is situated in Hebbur, a village in Kunigal Taluk, Tumkur district of Karnataka. The temple is managed by Shri Kodandashrama Mutt of Hebbur.

The village got its name because of the presence of large number of tigers. A devotee found the Shri Chakra (Hindu iconography) made of pancha loha (5 metals) in a well and handed it to Sri Kodandaramashrama Swamiji. The swamiji built a temple and installed the Shri Chakra and an idol of Goddess Kamashi Sharadamba. Goddess has four hands holding Pasha, Ankusha, Pustaka and Akshamala.

The Shri Chakra represents the universal energy and is very auspicious and sacred to Hindus. A huge hall is built in front of the sanctum sanctorum with 16 pillars representing the Shodashakshara.

The temple here has an association with Sringeri Matha and has become one of the important advaitha centers. Sringeri Swamiji Sri Sri Sri Bharathi Thirtha Mahaswamiji visited Hebbur Math in May 1999 and recognized the efforts of the present swamiji of Hebbur Matha Sri Narayanashrama Swamiji.

Sri Adi Shankaracharya’s idol is installed in the Matha. The sanctum sanctorum was renovated and is now shaped in the shape of the Shri Chakra that is installed inside.

Sri Chakra is considered powerful as it is the abode of Adi Parashakthi. There are three types of Sri Chakra and they are as follows:
  1. Bhooprasthara – Platen shape (flat plate)
  2. Kailasa Prasthara – Convex shape
  3. Meru Prasthara – Conical shape

The Hebbur shrine has Sri Chakra of Maha Meru and is seated on a Kurma Peetha (tortoise seat). Eight elephants are carved in the standing posture, a serpent, and eight Shakthi Devathas (gods of strength) are carved between the elephants. Above these are two platforms and on this there are 7 lotuses with 35, 25, 22, 18, 12, 8, and 5 petals respectively.
