Okra – Ladies Finger – Bhindi

Also known as Okra, Bhindi (Hindi), Bhendekayi (Kannada) is a very popular vegetable in India. It is grown all over the country and used to cook a variety of dishes.  The botanical name is Abelmoschus esculentum and belongs to Malvaceae family.

The vegetable is used in preparation of various dishes as well as in the paper industry and for extraction of fiber.  It is grown in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions around the world.

Okra plant grows to a height of 2 meters.  The leaves are lobed and are about 10 to 20 cm.  The flowers are pretty and resemble the other mallow flowers.  Okra flowers are white or yellow with a purple center and grow to a width of 4 to 8 cm.  Fruit capsule contains slimy seeds and they can grow up to 18 cm long.

Medicinal Use:
Consumption of Okra is good for the overall health as they are rich in Vitamins, Minerals, and Fiber essential for the healthy functioning of the human body.

Propagation:
Okra is grown by sowing seeds in well drained soils.  It can also be grown in pots.  Seeds are soaked overnight and then planted.  Germination takes place in 6 days.

Water generously.    Harvest when the fruit is tender.
