Flowering Tobacco

Flowering Tobacco

I was surprised that there is a flowering version of Tobacco.  Tobacco is largely grown in K.R.Nagar area.  During my birding trip, I have come across large acres of land growing Tobacco and never felt the need to write about this plant as it is used in substance that abuses the human body.

But, this is an exception as it is extremely attractive and colorful.  I photographed this in Singapore.

Other common names of Flowering Tobacco are Jasmine Tobacco, Ornamental Tobacco. In Hindi it is known as Tambaku.  The botanical name is Nicotiana alata and belongs to Solanaceae (Potato) family.

Flowering Tobacco is the ornamental version of the commercial tobacco. This is very good to plant in gardens.  It is a perennial plant and grows very well in Tropical regions.

The plant grows to a height of 8 feet.  This can be pruned to get the required height.  Leaves are green with rough surface.  The flowers are bright tube line flowers.  Flowers bloom in white, red, yellow, rose, purple, green, red, and cream.

This plant though pretty also contains narcotic poisons.

Propagation:

Propagation of flowering tobacco is through seeds.  Plant them in full sun and water daily.  Feed fertilizer periodically.
