Chinese Glory Bower Plant

Madras Malli

I remember admiring Chinese Glory Bower plants in bloom in Kudli Mutt in Mysore even as my maternal grandfather discussed his writings with the caretaker of the Mutt.

The other common names are Honolulu rose, Glory tree, and Stick bush. In Tamil it is known as Madras Malli. Botanical name is of Chinese Glory Bower is Clerodendrum chinense and belongs to Verbenaceae (verbena) family.

Chinese Glory Bower is a perennial plant and grows to a height of 2.4 m tall.

The plant has thick foliage on tall upright branches. The leaves are green, opposite, simple, and large about 6 to 10 inches long.

Flowers bloom in January and February in bunches at the tip of the branches.

They are white with a touch of pink and are fragrant.

The fragrance attracts many insects and butterflies. Flowers stay fresh for more than three days.

Propagation:
Propagation is from cuttings. Water the plant regularly and trim to tame the branches.
