Jhunka – Maharashtrian Zunka Recipe – Pitla Recipe

Jhunka

Jhunka is a side dish prepared using Gram flour, this dish is also known as Pitle.  Pitle bhath is the most common menu in most of North Karnataka and Maharashtrian homes.

Cuisine: North Karnataka and Maharashtra

Time Required: 20 Minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients:
1 1/2 Cups Gram Flour/Besan
1 Onion, Chopped finely
2 Green Chilies, Chopped finely
1 tsp Red Chili Powder
1tbsp Oil
1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
1/2 tsp Jeera/Cumin Seeds
A pinch of Turmeric Powder
Few Curry Leaves
1tbsp Coriander Leaves
2 tbsp Tamarind pulp (Optional)
Salt to taste

Method:
Heat Oil in a Kadai/Pan and add Mustard Seeds, when they start to splutter add Jeera/Cumin Seeds, Turmeric Powder and Curry Leaves. Next, add Onions and Green Chilies and fry for a minute.

Add 3 Cups of water and Salt and let it come to a boil.

Now slowly add the Gram Flour. Keep stirring. It does not matter if lumps are formed. Add Tamarind water.  Cook until the Gram Flour is cooked. If the mixture becomes too very thick, more water can be added.

Remove to a serving dish and add garnish with Coriander Leaves.

Serve hot Jhunka with plain Rice or Chapathi.
