Alasande Palya Recipe

Alasande Palya is a side dish prepared using Chinese Long Beans.  This is a very common dish prepared in Mysore and Bangalore region.  Tastes very good with Rice and Rasam.

Time Required: 20 Minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients:
40 Alasande Kayi / Chinese Long Beans
4 – 6 Green Chilies
1/2 Cup Fresh Grated Coconut
Few Curry Leaves
1tbsp Oil
2tsp Bengal Gram
1tsp Urad Dal (Black Gram split)
1tsp Mustard Seeds
1/2tsp Turmeric Powder
1 small piece of Jaggery
1tbsp Coriander Leaves, Chopped finely
Salt to taste

Method:
Wash Alasande and chop finely, slit the Green Chilies. Heat Oil in a kadai/pan and add Bengal Gram and Urad Dal and fry until they turn pink. Next add Mustard Seeds and when they splutter add Turmeric Powder, Curry Leaves and the chopped Beans.

Mix and add 2 Cups of water, Salt and Jaggery.

Close the kadai and let it cook for 5 minutes on medium flame. Add Coconut and Coriander and mix well. Remove Alasande Palya to a serving bowl.

Serve hot with your choice of Indian Bread or with Rice and Saru/Rasam.

Another method of preparing palya using Alasande is to grind Red Chilies, Coconut, Mustard, and Turmeric Powder.  Add this to the seasoning and fry for a minute.  Next add the Alasande and the rest of the ingredients and water.  Cook until tender.
