Sagarkatte, Mysore

The best part of the monsoon season is that the dams open their gates when full and the waterfalls and the backwaters along the river’s journey to meet the sea are fed with immeasurable water to regain their lost beauty.  This is the time when people visit these places to enjoy nature at its best.

Sagarkatte is a tiny hamlet situated 25 Kms from Mysore in Mandya district of Karnataka.  Here the main crops are Rice and Ragi (Finger Millet) and the fields are well irrigated and blessed by Cauvery River and its backwaters.  The Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam is a few kilometers away from this place.  Vyasaraya Mutha (A mutha is an ancient institution dating back to the Buddhist period, when these viharas/places or retreats became centers of educational activity), which is the youngest of all the Madhva organization, is headquartered in Sagarakatte village.   The organization currently has 3 mathas, one in Sagarakatte and two in Mysore (Jayalakshmipuram and Krishnamurthypuram).

During monsoon the sight of the backwaters shining splendidly like an ocean might be the inspiration behind its name “Sagarakatte” (Sagara means ocean and katte means a bund).  The railway bridge cuts across the river to give a magnificent view on both sides of the railway track.  The huge blanket of water lapping the luscious green fields and the palms swaying and reaching to the blue skies dotted and streaked with clouds makes a perfect landscape to freeze in a frame.

Sagarkatte railway station is the perfect stop and a walk on the railway track let’s you view and gaze at the enormous amount of water on either side almost rising up to lap the railway bridge.  A loaded picnic basket with hot Bisibelebath (Rice dish with lentils and vegetables),  Mosaranna (Curd Rice), Sandige (Fryums) and Mysore Pak (Sweet dish)  will complete this short and sweet picnic.
