Hassan district in Karnataka situated in the south-western part is popular for the many Hoysala style of temple architecture and the natural beauty. Hassan was ruled by Mauryas, Kadambas, Chalukyas, Gangas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara rulers.

Hassan is named after the goddess Hasanamba who is the presiding deity of the Hasanamba temple.

The main agricultural crop of the region are coffee, black pepper, potato, paddy, and sugarcane.

The whole region comprises of Southern Malnad, Semi-Malnad, and Southern Maidan.
