Fateh Sagar Lake is an artificial lake situated to the north of Lake Pichola in Udaipur. The lake was built in 1678 by Maharana Jai Singh. Heavy rains damaged the lake bund and the lake was renovated and restructured by Maharana Fateh Singh and this explains the name of the lake.
It is one of the many lakes of the Udaipur city. There are three islands on this lake and one of them is known as Nehru Park with a garden, restaurant, and a zoo. The other island is popular for the fountain and garden. On the third island is Udaipur Solar Observatory. The islands are accessible by motor boats, starting from Moti Magri / Rana Pratap Memorial.
The purpose of Fateh Sagar lake was to supply water for the purpose of drinking, farming, industrial, and so on. Water source to the lake is from the streams down the Aravalli hills. This lake is linked to Pichola, Madar and Badi lakes. The lake is pear shaped and has a road on the stone dam on the eastern side of the lake. The lake is 2.4 Km in length and 1.6 Km in width and deepest point is 11.5 meters.
An annual festival known as Hariyali Amavasya Mela (Green New Moon Fair) is held near Fateh Sagar lake in the Hindu month of Shravan (August / September).
The lake is a very attractive place for family fun time.
The other lakes of Udaipur are Fateh Sagar Lake, Jaismand Lake, Rajasmand Lake, Pichola Lake, Udai Sagar Lake, Dudh/ Doodh Talai, Jiyan Sagar (Badi Ka Talab), and Swaroop Sagar (Kumharia Talab).
