This ancient temple in Udupi is a must visit for all the devotees who throng this temple town. The temple is small and the presiding deity is Sri Chandramauleeshwara (Lord Shiva). Chandramauleeshwara means Shiva with the Moon perched on his head.
Legend behind the temple is that Moon performed a penance at this spot. Pleased with this, Lord Shiva appeared before him and the temple was built to commemorate this even.
In the literary work Madhwa Vijaya, Chandramauleeshwara Temple, Udupi is referred to as Moodu Devalaya as it lies to the east of Shri Anantheshwara temple.
The Swamiji visits the Chandramouleeshwara temple first before ascending to the Paryaya duties. After this, he takes the blessings of Sri Anantheshwara and Sri Krishna.
