Banasura Sagar dam is built across the Karamanathodu River, which is a tributary of the Kabini River. The dam situated at the foot of Banasura hill in Wayanad District of Kerala was started in 1979 to facilitate the Kakkayam Hydroelectric power project and to irrigate lands around and supply drinking water to the people living around this place.
It is the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia. This one kilometer long structure is built with stones and boulders. Banasura is the name of son of King Mahabali, who according to Mythology was a popular King of Kerala. Banasura is believed to have been in penance on top of these hills.
Due to the submerging of the surrounding areas, islands are formed completing the natural beauty. Hills in the background offer outstanding views and are popular for hikes. All hikes start from the Banasura dam.

Visitors have to park their vehicles 3 Km away from the dam and have to buy two-way tickets to reach the boating jetty by Jeep.
Speed and pedal boats are available for visitors to enjoy the beauty of the hills, crystal clear water, and the islands.
