Balmuri Falls and Edmuri Falls

Balmuri Falls and Edmuri Falls is picnickers paradise situated 18 Km from Mysore city.  Balmuri Falls is a man-made waterfall (check dam) built on Cauvery River.  As the river turns to the right at this place it is called as “Balamuri”, “Bala” means right and “Muri” means cut in Kannada.

While heading towards Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) from Mysore you can stop at Balmuri Falls for sometime and then proceed towards KRS.  An ancient Ganesha temple is near the falls.  Local people will take you boating in boats called “Theppa” for a price.

From this place river Cauvery surges towards Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary and Srirangapatna.  This place was calm and quiet with only the sounds of water from the falls and bird chirping to be heard.  Now, it is extremely noisy, stinky and messy during holidays.

Edmuri Falls is 2 Km away from Balmuri Falls.  It is also a check dam built on Kaveri River.    Near the parking lot at Balamuri take a left turn to reach Edamuri.  As the river turns to the left at this place it is called as “Edamuri”, “Eda” means left and “Muri” means cut in Kannada.

The total length of the check dam is 1.6 Km and it is very picturesque with palms, paddy fields and a small island.  Edamuri is more isolated and there are incidents of thefts, so please be careful with your belongings.

I appeal again to visitors not to litter the place.  I am still at a loss to understand the need to consume alcohol at such beautiful places and then break the bottles over the rocks!

We spotted a Serpent Eagle, Grey Horn Bill and the ubiquitous Crows in a striking pose at this place.
