Powder Puff Plant

Plant Summary:
The botanical name of Powder Puff Plant is Calliandra haematocephala belonging to the family Fabaceae. Powder puff plant is a sub-tropical plant native to India, Mexico, Madagascar, South America and the United States.

This evergreen shrub is grown for the attractive flowers that look like powder puff. The plant grows fast upto 15 feet in height. The leaves are light green and grow up to 2-3″. The flower bud looks like berries. The flowers are a mass of red stamens, like a small puffy ball and will be around 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Blooms around the year and are in red, pink and white. The fruit looks like a bean pod.

The flowers are very attractive to bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and sun birds.

Propagation:
Powder puff plant can be grown easily from cuttings and from seeds. Soak the seeds before sowing. Plant them either under direct or partial sunlight. The plant needs moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Water daily and feed a liquid fertilizer once in 20 days.
