Butterfly Pea Tree

Butterfly Pea Tree

The botanical name is Clitoria arborea and belongs to Fabaceae (Pea) family. Butterfly Pea Tree is native to Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru.

I had only come across Butterfly Pea creeper and never a tree. I could not believe when I saw a Butterfly Pea flower bloom on a tree.

Initially I thought that the creeper had grown on the tree and started searching for the plant. It dawned later that it is a Butterfly Pea Tree with the beautiful flowers blooming at the edge of the drooping branches.

Butterfly Pea Tree grows to a height of 10 m tall. The leaves are green, large, and pinnately compound. Flowers bloom in violet colors. I am no sure about other colors. The flowers are large and resemble the Butterfly Pea flowers.

Bees and small birds visit the flowers for honey.
