Good Friday

Good Friday

Having studied in a Catholic school, we were shown many movies on Jesus Christ. I remember when I was 6 or 7 yrs old and crying out with all my heart when Jesus was being nailed to the cross and Mary and other supporters crying helplessly.

Good Friday is the Friday just before Easter. Good Friday is also called as Holy Friday, Black Friday, or Great Friday. On this day the Christian community commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and death at cavalry*.

This is the time, known as Lent when Christians observe penance and fasting and this period starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Good Friday. It is believed that Jesus fasted for 40 days before he began his preaching.

Traditionally Hot cross buns are prepared and eaten on Good Friday in parts of England. The famous song Hot Cross Buns is also sung on this day.

Hot cross buns!
Hot cross buns!
One ha penny, two ha penny,
Hot cross buns!
Hot cross buns!
Hot cross buns!
If you have no daughters,
Give them to your sons!

A wooden cross is displayed in churches for worship. People kiss it and a service at 3’O clock is held and narratives from the four Gospels are read out. The suffering endured by Jesus Christ for three hours on the cross is remembered with sermons, meditation and prayers. Many people carry a heavy cross on their shoulders like Jesus and walk for a distance. Yet another service is held at midnight. This is the day of prayer and penance, and the bells of the churches do not ring on Good Friday.

*Calvary or Golgotha are the English language/Western Christian names given to the site, outside of ancient Jerusalem’s early 1st century walls, ascribed to the crucifixion of Jesus.
