Head Ring making – Simbi – Support for head loads making – Suggan Pad making

Simbi

The head rings played a very important role in the earlier days to carry loads on the head.  Even now, many vegetable vendors place the basket of vegetables on the head and use a head ring.

The head ring is made using many materials and the most popular is to twist a cloth and shape it into a circle and place on the head.

Here I am using the twigs of the plant called “Nela Nelli” (Country Gooseberry) plant that is used by the South Indians to make into Simbi or the head ring.

Materials required:
Fresh Twigs
Sponge, Cloth, or Jute ropes / threads
Colorful cloth if you are using sponge
Needle and thread or you can use glue

Method:
Remove the leaves from the twigs and twist the twigs to form a circle.  Lock the edges of the twigs by tucking them into the twigs securely.

Cut the sponge and twist it round the twigs.

Cut the cloth in strips and twist it round the twigs.  Use the colorful cloth if needed to get a decorative look.

If you are using Jute ropes, cover the twigs with the ropes.

Place pots on the rings.
