Scarlet Morning Glory

Another common came of Scarlet Morning Glory is Scarlet Creeper, Red star, Mexican Morning Glory. It is known as Hale Balli in Kannada. The botanical name is Ipomoea hederifolia and belongs to Convolvulaceae (morning glory) family.

Scarlet Morning Glory is an annual creeper and native of America. The stems are smooth and hairy with tendrils. With support it can grow up to 20 feet. The leaves are green, and the appearance differs according to the species.

The flowers are Red and blooms in clusters on the stalk. It is around 2.5 to 4.5 cm in length. Scarlet Morning Glory flower tube is long and narrow. The petals widening out to look like a bell. The stamens and pistil are long and are seen outside extend beyond the end of the flower.

The fruit is round with dark brown to black seeds. The fruits are 6–7 mm across and the seeds are 3 – 4 mm long. Butterflies and small birds are attracted to these flowers.

Scarlet Morning Glory are planted as an ornamental plant in many gardens near fences and pergolas. The root of the plant is used to treat few ailments.

The other morning glory creepers are Beach Morning Glory, Split Second Morning Glory, Dwarf Morning Glory, and Blue Cluster Vine.
